National History
Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, Inc. was established in
1988 at California Polytechnic State University, San
Luis Obispo. Since its founding, Nu Alpha Kappa has
grown to be the largest Latino based fraternity on
the west coast. At the present Nu Alpha Kappa is
compromised of fourteen chapters representing some
of California and Colorado's most prestigious
private and state funded universities with a
membership of over 1000 strong. Nu Alpha Kappa is a
fraternity, which encompasses and values all
cultures.
The dynasty began with a meeting that took place on
February 26, 1988. Fifteen good friends (Nacos),
would mark the beginning of a better social
environment at California Polytechnic State
University, San Luis Obispo.
The good friends (Nacos) got together to express
their ideas and to demonstrate that they were part
of Cal Poly State University. They were enthusiastic
about starting a club to help minority students
overcome the culture shock experienced when arriving
at a predominantly Anglo University. As time passed,
each member's excitement grew and in their quest to
create structure to their ideas, they decided to
form a fraternal cultural brotherhood.
The group of friends knew that this process would
take a lot of time and effort. Eleven members
decided to go forward and incorporate the word "Naco"
into the Greek fraternity system. The "Nacos" would
be known and identified as "NU ALPHA KAPPA", or "NAK"
for short. While NAK chose to adopt a Greek
fraternity structure, their primary focus would be
academic excellence, brotherhood and unity through a
commitment to maintain their culture. The pressures
of being the first Latino Based Fraternity in the
history of Cal Poly State University solidified the
commitment to develop NAK into a leading
organization. Our eleven Founding Fathers concluded
that NAK's mission statement would be as follows:
"We, NU ALPHA KAPPA, seek to unite and involve all
students in a more harmonious and brotherly
atmosphere through academic, social and cultural
means. There is a need to interface the various
backgrounds that constitute the student body of our
Fraternal University Chapter, in order to improve
relations amongst all students and the community"
"We are Nu Alpha Kappa men and let no brother lie,
because once a NAK always a NAK until the day we
die"
Our Philosophy Nu Alpha Kappa is a commitment to
Education, our Community, and Brotherhood. Never
shall it mean a loss of identity but rather
remaining true to oneself.
Nu Alpha Kappa is sharing life with one another. It
is learning to accept and respect differences while
working together in cooperative spirit. Nu Alpha
Kappa is participation in-group activities. It is
working with one another to reach a common goal.
Nu Alpha Kappa is camaraderie in all aspects of
education, work, and play. It is sharing with one
another not only our problems but our achievements
as well.
Nu Alpha Kappa is love for the individual and for
the group as a whole. It is our fraternity spirit
and our strong belief in Brotherhood that lead us to
care for one another, thus educating our hearts to
be unselfish.
Nu Alpha Kappa is "real" friends who are not only
interested in one another but each other's family
and friends as well.
Nu Alpha Kappa is loyalty, courtesy and
encouragement from day to day. It is an opportunity
to develop and enhance one's talent and is the
catalyst to realize and achieve one's full
potential.
Nu Alpha Kappa is like an individual, in that, it
possesses a personality and a unique quality. It's
personality, is the sum of each brother's individual
qualities. It is dependent on the traits each
brother contributes, for it is their individual
characteristics that determine the quality of the
whole.
"We are Men of Mind, Men of Culture and Men of
Pride"
